I don't think it's the Leather or metal that changes the sound I would say it's the pressure plate that makes the difference. Please be careful with solvents like vinegar or even piping hot water. These can discolor a mouthpiece. I would not use toothpaste because it is slightly abrasive. Just use luke warm water with a SOFT toothbrush. Remember to clean your mouthpiece once a week or as needed..
